Farewell My Concubine

Farewell My Concubine is a historical epic set in the tumultuous 20th century of China. It starred Xiong as DAE, a picking opera actor who was trained from a young age to play female roles. He nurses an unrest-precated love for his fellow actor and childhood friend Xiao Lo. The film won wide critical acclaim; it shared the Palm Dior at the Cannes Film Festival with Jane Tampean's The Piano. Yet, the film was briefly banned in China. No official reasons were given, but it's not difficult to guess.
