The History of Modern Industrial Civilization

The conditions of modern life, what we know as modern industrial civilization, is one of the most historically anomalous periods by far in human history. So there's really no way to approach how we relate to the world that doesn't take account of that material revolution many times over the past 200 years. That's sort of the Hegelian, whereas Marx's point is that none of these things can really be thought of at all, unless you're thinking it in its necessary connection to material conditions.
