What Is the Composition of the Students?

You had to be a person of basically ok reputation, so some sort of letter of recommendation, someone vouching for you was good. There were big differences and sometimes splits and tensions between richer and poorer students. Some aristocrats, people of high birth, who studied or taught at universities,. often they would be expected to receive certain deferences from the university. Many other students were in a middle class, kind of proto bourgeois, or quite poor, and had to scrape by while studying.
