The Story of Park's Journey Down the River
Mungo Park was traveling down the Niger River with his guide, Amadi. He offered gifts to a local chief and king of Housa in exchange for their protection. The king of H Mousa's gifts included five silver rings. When he didn't receive them, two men on horseback took Amadi prisoner. They then tried to stop Park from reaching the Atlantic by throwing spears and arrows at him. Two slaves were killed as they attempted to escape through one of the other channels. But it would do no good; Mungo Park drowned in the Busa rapids. His son Thomas is now going to take another young man across Africa.
