Lafayette and Company made a quick run-up of Hudson River to Albany. For this leg of the trip, Alexander Hamilton's widow Eliza and her son Alexander Jr. joined the party. Young James McEwen Smith would grow up to become the first African American to hold a medical degree. When asked what Hamilton meant to Lafayette, he reflected on his friend, now dead 20 years.
