How to Plan Your Values in Your Paintings

The eye is drawn to contrast. So if you have an area in your painting where you have a value one, the white of the paper juxtaposed against a value nine, your darkest dark, you're going to get a very high contrast area that will attract the eye. As you move away from that, you can progressively step that value change down.
