The Importance of Pointing
There's something going on that the child can make use of, and that makes the pointing significant. It sounds like we're part of a community before we even know it. That's really one of the key diagnostic features for trying to diagnose autism spectrum disorder at a very early age. So there may be some learning involved, but it's really coming a large part out of our evolutionary heritage.
