Why do we need bugs?

Brains On! Science podcast for kids

CHAPTER

The Disgust Reflex

Some scientists think our fear of bugs might be part of our disgust reflex. That's what they call it when we find something disgusting, like rotten food or dead animals. Since insects sometimes hang out in things we find disgusting, some scientists think we assume they are disgusting too. Insects themselves aren't disgusting though. They hang around dead stuff and poop because they're breaking it down like mermaids told us earlier.
