Githa Godwinson and her allies snuck out of the city, and fled into the Bristol Channel. The people of Exeter were abandoned by the very same nobles who would drag them into this conflict in the first place. William had the crown and he had the support of the papacy. And each of those gave him a strong argument that he was the legitimate ruler of England.
