Gary recalls a childhood in which unexpected blasts of rage and shaming denigration from his father were very frequent. His father would bellow, how can you be so stupid over the smallest little mistake that little Gary would make like, you know, an arithmetic error or spilling some milk. So it was just searingly shameful shaming for him. But no one ever came to his defense or objected to dad for ripping into him like that. And he told me: "It meant dad was right about me and everybody knew it"
