The sun is 422 times further away than the moon. The best case scenario for an eclipse is a 'hybrid' eclipse, in which both planets are at right distance from each other to make it look more like a ring. An International Space Station crew member has seen one of these hybrid eclipses - but he's never been able to tell if they're real or not.
