I know you talk a little bit about feminism. My most recent book was called A Strange Stirring, The Feminine Mystique in American Women at the Dawn of the 60s. I did interviews with many women and men who read Betty Friedan's The Feminine Mystery. Today when I reread it, it's like duh, it's not particularly inspiring. But in trying to figure out why people like my mother were so taken with this book, I really had to do an in-depth study of what marriages were like in the 50s and 60s. It was an eye opener even for a historian who didn't have many illusions to start with.
