The long term effect of this shit right now I think in particular is that you begin to get freaked the fuck out. The news does quite often cite data that is verifiably true. It's just the way that they're citing the data has whatever their particular political angle is and they editorialize. Because they're saying something true but from an editorial tone then you can slowly start getting warped into whatever the particular version of the zeitgeist is that they want to illuminate.
