The Relationship Between Israel and Edom During the Monarchy

Genesis chapter 36 contains a list of Edomite kings. These are the kings who reigned in the land of Edom before any king reigned over the Israelites. David actually ruled over Edom as its king. But then we read later on in the book of first Kings that when they had their chance, the Edomites rebelled against the Israelites and they gained independence.
