There are some amazing figures in your book. I think it's fridge ownership. There are more fridges in East Germany than in West Germany. And yet, as you write, there are moments of real anxiety in the West during the 60s and 70s that the East is forging ahead. In society, many people feel they're actually further ahead. If you haven't got relatives in the West then that doesn't affect you very much at that point.
