In the early 80s, a neighbor he would later identify as Willie Pearl loaned him a portable battery-powered keyboard. Kelly began writing rudimentary songs like this one about his mother: "I want to piss on you" He got some training at school from Lena McLinn, who led chorus and mentored Broadway star Mandy Patankin. She even took it upon herself to inform Robert's basketball coach that he would no longer be playing on the team.
