The Importance of Institutionalism
There was a strong institutional identity when the immigrants first came and that lasts up until the mid 20th century really I think in the Catholic Catholics until Vatican II. My parents' generation had that in a way that we don't anymore. They had a sense of meaning and purpose but it came not from the self it came from I would call it the great tradition that was mediated through the institutions that they participated in. And again I'm not just you know singing the praises of institutionalism but there was a loss.
