The Good News of the Lord's Day

Torah portion talks about two types of redemption, the redemption of slaves and the redemption of the land. To redeem something in this context means to buy it back. If a Jewish person becomes so impoverished that his creditors foreclose on him and make him a slave, his next of kin has the responsibility of redeeming him by buying him back from slavery. Failing that, he is to be released in the year of Jubilee.
