When we sleep, when we are in REM mode, the brain is flooded with calming chemicals that enables you to try out a lot of emotions. And then you dream variants of that emotion and it doesn't copy the event but just copies the emotion. So if you have PTSD, it's because you had such a strong experience that the sleeping chemicals aren't enough. Then you do get that safe state. You can actually in a waking state talk about anything. Like people who have been assaulted or raped or been through whatever held escape you can think about under the influence of certain molecules.
