Home ownership in Australia after the Second World War increased from something like 47% to 71% by the early 1970s. Since then, it's essentially been a rocky road downwards - although home ownership tipped up a little between the 2016 and 2021 census from 65 to 66%. So there was really one generation that had it great and then we've sort of been trading water at that point. In fact, I would argue that Singapore has an even better more comprehensive version of what Australia did that operates to this day.
