The Importance of Self Control
When people experience gratitude to someone else, they're more willing to do things for them and sacrifice themselves. How does that work towards yourself? Do you feel grateful for yourself and then you're more likely to do good things for yourself? Let me give you an example. In the classic studies out there, which I'm sure some of your listeners are familiar with on self control is what's called the marshmallow test. It's a study done by a psychologist named Walter Michelle in the 70s. Most adults don't like marshmallows, but they do like cash. And so if we made them feel grateful, they wouldn't take that deal.
