Mendelssohn is very clever. He basically says to Gerta, look, I'm going to play all this music in chronological order. Originality lies in the working of a work of art, not in the labour of an artist. T.S. Eliot's essay takes apart the idea of tradition as being a dead weight. The only originality that really works is the originality that belongs to art. Jonathan: "I think it's where we ought to be thinking of originality"
