The Central Pacific's Race for Workers

The Central Pacific railroad was built in the 1860s and 1870s. The company advertised for only white laborers at first, but soon started advertising for Chinese workers too. Supervisors had racist ideas about how Chinese men were too slight to do the work. They thought it would be too hard to supervise them if they didn't speak English.
