In small irish rural communities, sometimes members of the community had to host the local parish priest in their house. And i know this used to give my grandma severe anxiety, cause she didn't know what the fock do you feed the priest? She thought one of her folkin chickens had come into the kitchen and shat on the priest's place. That would have been a common reaction for just regular, poor irish people in the early part of the twentieth century.
