When the novel came out, because it was dedicated to william godwin, a lot of people believed that percy had written it. He was kicked out of oxford after only six months for writing a pamphlet on um atheism. The book did very poorly with critics a who accused the novel of having the same kind of lurid quality as some of his earlier novels.
