Freud conceptualized narcissism as the cathaxis of the self. Co-Hut knew what it was like to be humiliated and to live in a state of shame. He had a real feel for people who have to build a self under conditions of feeling like they're in a shame position. So he had a lot of empathy for people who were trying to keep their self-states steady.
