In 1840 a writer named John Wilson wrote lectures on our Israelite origin and began lecturing across England and Ireland about the theory that the real Jews were basically everyone but actual Jewish people. Like many writers after him one of his favorite techniques was to look for words in different languages that sounded the same assuming usually erroneously that if the word sounds were similar the languages and their speakers had to be connected. Since similar sounds often crop up in otherwise unrelated languages they allowed Wilson to claim and to believe that he had proved that quote many of our most common English words and names of familiar objects are almost pure Hebrew.
