The Importance of Troponin Testing for Chest Pain
The sensitivity of the one and two hour algorithms that most sites use for working up patients with chest pain are also in the 96 to 99% neighborhood. So, getting a sensitivity any higher than 98.5% is really hard to do, even with adding troponin testing. A 5% loss in specificity would translate into 750 additional patients who would be committed to unnecessary investigations or admissions every year With huge operational impact and potential complications.
