The Pervasive Feeling of France
There's a pervasive feeling that France doesn't deserve to endure. Rest by, as I recall from the novel, is very, he captures that sentiment in many forms. It's very hard to find a character in the novel who represents someone trying to argue for civilizational quantum. Most of the time, even the representative of high culture are representing versions that are evacuated with no real spiritual content.
