CHAPTER

Is Putin's War in Ukraine at a Turning Point?

There are those who suggested that if Vladimir Putin was toppled as leader, this could herald hope for an end to the conflict. I don't think that removing Putin necessarily fundamentally changes the problem because there might well be a replacement who's even more radical than Putin. A peace deal is almost unthinkable because he cannot be trusted by his opponents. The Kremlin has woefully misjudged both the military challenge and financial consequences of war with its neighbor. Instead of these failures being met with deafening calls to end the conflict in Ukraine, Russians have been loathed to rise up in protest. Now Putin has hinted at using nuclear weapons which has caused considerable alarm in the West.
