In 18 36, karl became enamored with philosophy. He fell in with the more radical and icono classic group called the young hegalians. They published challenges to the reliability, historicity and believability of christianity and the bible. This was a bad time to be a young hegalian; mark's dream of a university position was squelched. To make matters worse, mark's father had died in 18 38,. beginning endless rounds of bickering over money from the inheritance to make a living.
