The 16 o four session of parliament had been prorogued by the distinctly grumpy king in july 16 o 4. The honorable members, as well as the less honourable and even the frankly disreputable ones, were told to write a date for the next session on the fifth of november, 16 o five. So presumably some of the more anxious ones scrawled in their diary remember remember the fifth ofNovember - although this being seventeenth century england, we have absolutely no idea how many different ways they spelled it. But not before long that memorable date, a chain of events which started with a note being handed to a servant of a catholic lord
