The Heroic Strike of Shackleton
Shackleton was an officer with Robert Falcon Scott on the 1901-04 expedition south. He led his own expedition, the so-called Nimrod expedition, 1977 to 1999. With the Nimrod expedition from 07-09, he reached 88 degrees south towards the south pole. His third expedition of 1914-17 resulted in his ship, the Endurance, getting stuck in the ice and eventually sinking. But there were still other things to do in this heroic phase of Antarctic exploration.
