The Tensions of Being an Academic and Public Philosopher

The main difference between academic and public philosophy is like how much familiarity and buy in to the questions you can presuppose in your audience. I just take a lot of joy in speaking to that second kind of audience, the audience that demands to know, why should I care? So I see it as a personal benefit to myself. There's some of my favorite people to talk to, but I hate writing for them because when I'm writing for them, I'm basically writing for an audience that doesn't want to read the things I'm writing.
