The Rise of the Anti-Masonic Party
This was an event that as I said earlier was heavily promoted by news publisher Thirlo Weed. The idea of anti-Masonry had already entered into the mainstream political sphere. John Quincy Adams, the son of John Adams who was best friends and close colleagues with all of the original free Masonic founding fathers. Joseph Smith wanted to take advantage of that climate. And in a way, he thought that what he was doing was anti-Masonic because it was bringing back the original temple rituals. But at the same time believed that Mason's had some bastardized original form of the temple rituals that they practiced.
