Fishing weirs are essentially some sort of a fence. They funnel the fish into an area where you can then spear them or entrap them in some way. It's very possible that different groups have even come together during this fishing period, maybe even rivals or just neighboring communities to then work together and get what they need for their group. If you're relying on that food resource, especially if it's going to be a major component on your diet for everybody in your group for at least a good part of the year, then it's important.
