MongoDB abandoned its open source roots, changing the license to sspl making it unusable for many open source and commercial projects. So ferret DB is built on top of Postgres SQL, but it is wire compatible with MongoDB. It exchanges the binary JSON encoding across the wire, just like MongoDB does.
