At the age of 14, Diane became a compulsive talker. She would talk to anyone and everyone about her innermost thoughts and dreams. With her father, Diane was silent and did what she was told. When violence or sex abuse occurred, Diane would often experience periods of blacking out. It's considered a defense mechanism in psychoanalytic theory.
