So can I just start though by praying and just asking for God's help as we consider this? Father, we do thank you so much for your spirit. We thank you that you are at work in the world even when we don't understand how or why. Father, we thank you for your care and compassion for every individual caught up in this horrible situation for your long history of patience and love and compassion towards all of the people who live in this part of the world and all the people concerned about them. Lord Jesus, we thank you that of the increase of your government and peace there will be no end and you ultimately will reign on David's throne forever. And we say, Lord, hasten the day. Maranatha, Lord, bring that day closer and help us as we try and think wisely and pray wisely in the here and now. Help us give us wisdom and insight to inform us in our thoughts and prayers. Let me pray these things in Jesus' name. Amen. Amen. So what I want to do is to think through, I'm probably in three, you've heard me preach enough before, most of you have anyway, three chunks. But just talk for a bit about how we understand what's happening, so how to understand it and then talk a bit about how to think about it, which is a little bit more of a sort of trying to bring in some theology to pay on some biblical reflection on how we should think about what's going on. And then I want to finish by talking about how we pray about it. And I've got a particular passage and scripture that I hope will help you as it's helped me to pray for the whole situation that I'm folding and has been since the 7th of October. So that's sort of how we understand it. There's a bit of context, some maps, a little bit of history, but not loads, partly my expertise, partly I think some of you already know a lot more about this than me. But how to understand it and then how to think about it. And then I think the most important thing really, how to pray about it. Chances are that there might be one or two of us who are involved in international diplomacy and aid and direct action relating to what's going on. There might be more than one or two, but it's probably not many. All of us on the other hand are called to pray. And so that's where I'd love to get to actually to serve us. And then we'll have time for questions afterwards. So that's just a sort of quick summary where I think we're going. When I start with some maps, I'm going to try and keep this light and visual, because I think there's just this A way of telling the story. It's not the only one, but some of us will know loads more than I'm saying and maybe a lot more than me about some of this stuff. But I just want to tell the story, tell the most recent history of this part of the world through a few maps. Some of this will be very familiar, some won't. So we have the first one up. Okay, so we are now at the end of World War I and the Ottoman Empire, which is effectively the Holy Land had been under the Ottoman Empire for 400 years. So from about 1520-ish until the end of the First World War. And at the end of the First World War, the imperial powers who won the war, which includes Britain, but obviously also includes France and the US and so on, have to decide what are we going to do about, of all of the lands that have now been conquered, concord nations, some of them we need to continue to rebuild as a nation-state, which is what happens to say Germany and others are empires that are now have just are collapsing. And we're very concerned about what might happen. Some of that is imperialism in its normal guise, to be honest, and we probably many of us will have enough awareness of that. So not need to go into that. But some of it is also a concern about what happens to the minorities when these places collapse. So it's not all, I don't think it was just an oil grab, if I can put it like that.
