Folk music used to convey a sense of radicalism, and it seems to be a sort of bad radical identity. That all changes around the end of the eighties, in the turn of the nineties. There is just not much point either to protest in music or to revolutionarrevolutionary rallying calls. Without either being able tofulfil either of those functions, the kind of radical vocation of folk music ends up being very difficult to fulfil.
