The Rise and Fall of a Lynch Mob
On February 16th, 1819, a heavily armed mob assembled and rode from Charleston in the direction of five-mile house. They had received word that a gang of thieves who was responsible for a string of highway robberies near Ashley Ferry had holed up at one of the houses. According to author Bruce Orr, the mob allegedly had permission from the owners of several small houses in the area to proceed as they saw fit. "They said it was fine if we murdered these people," he says.
