Abu Dardah was a well-known merchant before Islam came. He tried to balance his work and worship, but couldn't do it both at once. So he had no choice but to give up his businesses and focus on worship. In SubhanAllah Abu Dardah is basically admitting that he could not figure out how to continue to be successful with his business or achieve his passion for the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam.
