The Forest Gump of the Age of Revolution
Lafayette is fascinating as kind of an avatar for that whole age. He's a very, he's a smart guy, but not some towering intellect. And so when he learned about this thing called liberty, he just naturally assumed that that was going to mean the end of slavery. It sort of takes a towering intellect like madison or jefferson to truly compartmentalize these two thoughts in their heads.
