The Struggles of Teachers
Former teachers of the year are uniquely positioned to speak out publicly against say bills limiting what teachers can teach and students can learn. As public figures, they occupy a sort of in-between space. On one hand, they're actual teachers whose students and parents know. On the other, they're a stand-in for the teachers who are constantly being attacked in the abstract. For history teacher Chris Deere, speaking out seemed like the obvious thing to do.
