The Importance of Table Height in Laparoscopic Surgery

Dr. Shula: Laparoscopy is unique in that instruments are often working six inches to a foot above the actual patient. For some of our shorter surgeons when we're dealing with high BMIs sometimes it's impossible to maintain this appropriate upper body position. Dr. White famously makes a four step platform that sometimes has two levels depending on the height of our patients. One thing I'll add with steps it's not enough to have one step you stand on so I actually like to make a platform with steps which I think is safer.
