The Prostitutes of Akaluthai
A 4th century BC fragment sums this up quite well. Theophrastus says respectable Athenian women did not open their doors when somebody knocked, but only slaves or prostitutes. Independent prostitutes who worked the street were on the next level higher. They had a public advertising option too as sandals with marked souls have been found which left an imprint that stayed at Akaluthai or follow me on the ground. Some of them made a decent fortune applying their trade. In Athens they had to be registered with the city and pay attacks. Their tariffs though are difficult to evaluate as they varied significantly.
