The rationalist and pluralist views, if I'm right, are based on accounts of what can go wrong in states. But unlike a theory that's built up from first principles about individual rights, this is going to be the kind of model in which we might just be faced with a choice of bads. The thing that we do to check the intermediate group from oppressing its members might be justified but leave us with a stronger state than before.
