Have We Ever Seen a Supernova?
The amazing thing about a supernova is that they're not just a flash. You might even be able to ignore it for a week and then eventually catch it up there in the sky, shining its photons at you. The people have done a deep dive into the history of astronomy and found times when locals have looked up in the sky and seen something they didn't understand and wrote it down. We can now reinterpret those writings as evidence for supernova.
