To what extent could the practice of therapy be thought of as economically or politically regressive? I think it's undeniable that if you are willing to credit the idea that people's psychological difficulties and mental illness is not simply rooted in their internal lives. The high incidence of mental illness amongst black men, for instance, is clearly not simply a matter of their individual psychology, but of the racism they encounter in the society around them. And so the proper function of therapy ought to be to mobilize them in collective action against the system that makes them ill,. In part by rolling with their illness rather than trying to remediate it.
