The Relationship of a Peasant to His Landlord
The relationship of a peasant to his landlord was not entirely unlike the relationship of, say, a major noble. A and this fractile quality, like as like in china, this fractily organized society has a great resilience. It's able to preserve itself and recreate itself even in the midst of disruptions like wars or famines. The basic relationships can always be sort of reconstituted and re invented as you go so it's a way of organizing society that can stand up against the kind of chaos of events like you in the early middle ages.
